Penn State Mont Alto Research Award winners

For the third straight year, Penn State Mont Alto has provided an award for the Franklin Science and Technology Fair: The Penn State Mont Alto Research Award. The award is presented to the individual student in each division who's project best exemplifies creativity using the scientific method. The prize consists of an award certificate (created by Prof. Hawkins) and a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. Here are the winning projects for 2000 (more information on the projects will be provided later):

The Primary Division (grades 1-3)

Title: When Do Birds Feed?
Student: Emery Etter
School: Grandview Elementary
Description: Studied the feeding habits of various birds. This project reported very detailed observations on specific feeding habits of different types of birds.

The Intermediate Division (grades 4-6)

Title: Sprouting Is a Snap
Student: Daniel Reed
School: Lurgan Elementary
Description: Studied the effect of different conditions on seed germination, including water, light and exposure to microwaves.

The Middle Division (grades 7-8)

Title: Insulator
Student: Brandon Michael McDonnell
School: Hooverville Elementary School
Description: Studied the effect of different materials on sound absorption. Samples were placed between a sound source and a sound detector; sound intensity was measured and recorded for the different materials.

The Junior Division (grades 9-10)

Title: From Gray to Green
Student: Martin Robert Goldman
School: Waynesboro Area Middle School
Description: Studied the effect of using recycled water on plant growth. Compared growth when plants were watered with tap water and "gray" water (wash water).

The Senior Division (grades 11-12)

Title: Garbage Gobblers

Description: Studied the environmentally sound activity of composting using worms to aid the decomposition.
