Penn State Mont Alto Research Award winners

For the third straight year, Penn State Mont Alto has provided an award for the Franklin Science and Technology Fair: The Penn State Mont Alto Research Award. The award is presented to the individual student in each division who's project best exemplifies creativity using the scientific method. The prize consists of an award certificate (created by Prof. Hawkins) and a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. Here are the winning projects for 2001 (more information on the projects will be provided later):

The Primary Division (grades 1-3)

Title: Magnets!
Student: Dakota Bricker
School: Montgomery Elementary
Description: Studied properties and interactions of magnets, especially groups of magnets. This project was hands on and interactive, and we judges had a hard time keeping our hands off it.

The Intermediate Division (grades 4-6)

Title: Can Guinea Pigs Be Conditioned?
Student: Ashley Ritchey
School: Hooverville Elementary
Description: Studied whether or not a guinea pig could be trained to find lettuce. This was a nice project because it used 5 different subjects and various different starting distances from the lettuce.

The Middle Division (grades 7-8)

Title: Batteries: Cold, Colder, Coldest!
Student: Sara Marie Bean
School: Greencastle-Antrim Middle
Description: Studied the effect of temperature on battery life. The different temperatures studied were provided by the freezer and refrigerator sections of a refrigerator, and room temperature. The student used a battery powered string of lights, which could be observed without opening the freezer.

The Junior Division (grades 9-10)

Title: Does My Dog Have a Favorite Color?
Student: Jeremy M. Smith
School: Greencastle-Antrim Middle
Description: Studied color vision in a dog. Six different color bowls were filled with treats, and the dog (Jeb) was released; the placement of the bowls was varied over a 12 day period. The student found that Jeb had no color preference, but rather than Jeb went to the nearest bowl consistently.
