Penn State Mont Alto Research Award winners

For the sixth straight year, Penn State Mont Alto has provided an award for the Franklin Science and Technology Fair: The Penn State Mont Alto Research Award. The award is presented to the individual student in each division who's project best exemplifies creativity using the scientific method. The prize consists of an award certificate (created by Prof. Hawkins) and a $100 U.S. Savings Bond. Here are the winning projects for 2003 (more information on the projects will be provided later):

The Primary Division (grades 1-3)

Title: A "Tail" of Two Streams
Student: Madison Brooken
School: Guilford Hills Elementary School
Description: This project compared and contrasted the life found in mountain streams vs. meadow streams.

The Intermediate Division (grades 4-6)

Title: Outsmarting Hercules
Student: Jared Mowen
School: Greencastle Elementary School
Description: This project studied the use of pulleys to lift heavy loads; the charts show lifting force needed vs. number of pulleys used.

The Middle Division (grades 7-8)

Title: Does This Make Me Look Fat?
Student: Barbara Kuhn
School: Waynesboro Area Middle School
Description: This project reported on a survey of perceived vs. actual body type; the survey contained many unrelated questions, so as to disguise the actual purpose of the survey.

The Junior Division (grades 9-10)

Title: How Does Temperature Affect the Viscosity of Oil?
Student: Christa Hoover
School: Greencastle-Antrim Middle School
Description: This project reported on a study of oil viscosity vs. temperature; the viscosity was determined by measuring the time for a ball bearing to fall to the bottom of a test tube filled with oil.

The Senior Division (grades 11-12)

Title: The Effects of Salt upon the Corrosion of Metals and Possible Deicing Alternatives
Student: Michael Johnson
School: Chambersburg Area Senior High School
Description: This project reported on a study of metal corrosion due to road salt, used as an ice melter. The project reported on steps that can be taken to minimize the corrosion as well as alternative ice melters.
